Military Move FAQs - FAQs
What is the Defense Personal Property System (DPS)?
DPS is the centralized online portal used to manage your move. It is where you will schedule your shipment, track its status, and file any necessary claims.
How do I use the DPS system to start my move?
Your Move Manager will walk you through setting up your DPS profile, entering your move dates and shipment details, and submitting your request. From there, DPS is where you can track your shipment status and file any claims, and our team stays available to answer questions at every step.
What happens during Entitlement Counseling?
A relocation specialist reviews your orders and walks you through exactly what your PCS entitlements cover, including weight allowances, storage options, and per diem, so there are no surprises. We answer your questions up front and document everything so you have a clear record of what you are authorized.
Are there special entitlements for “Pro-Gear”?
Yes. Professional gear, such as equipment, tools, or reference materials required for your official duties, is generally authorized in addition to your standard household goods weight allowance. Your Move Manager can confirm exactly what qualifies as pro-gear under your specific orders.
What is the difference between a Government Move and a Personally Procured Move (PPM)?
In a Government Move, the government arranges and pays a mover directly to handle your shipment from start to finish. In a Personally Procured Move (PPM, formerly DITY), you arrange and manage the move yourself and are reimbursed up to what the government would have paid for a comparable move. We support service members through either option.
